Patricia Benner: Patricia Benner, PhD., R.N., FAAN, FRCN is a nursing theorist famous for introducing the Skill Acquisition in nursing or the "From Novice to Expert model." This theory explains that nurses develop skills and understand patient care from experience, over time, through proper education and from a variety of experiences.
This is why it is possible to follow the stages of Benner’s theory without actually wanting to be a nurse in the first place. Dr. Patricia Benner is a nursing theorist who first developed a model for the stages of clinical competence in her classic book “From Novice to Expert: Excellence and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice”. Her model is one of the most useful frameworks for assessing nurses’ needs at different stages of professional growth. Patricia Benner created this nursing theory to explain that a nurse’s skills and knowledge of patient care prospers over time due to education and personal experience (Nursing Theory, 2016). Dr Patricia Benner introduced the concept that expert nurses develop skills and understanding of patient care over time through a sound educational base as well as a multitude of experiences. She proposed that one could gain knowledge and skills ("knowing how") without ever learning the theory ("knowing that"). In 1984 Patricia Benner introduced her theory from novice to expert after an observational and interview study of clinical nursing practice situations from the perspective of new nurses and their preceptors (Benner, 2001).
